Why Early Diagnosis of Dementia is Important

Why Early Diagnosis of Dementia is Important
By Adam Shepherd

Memory issues like Alzheimers and Dementia can be disorienting for the person affected and confusing for family and friends. Dementia is also a progressive ailment which means it starts out gradual and gets worse over time. While the effects are more subtle, early detection is crucial to prevent confusion and and worsenning symptoms later in the illness.

Firstly, and most importantly, early detection and diagnosis of Dementia means the patient and family have more opportunity to understand what is happening. This helps by allowing everyone involved to come up with a comprehensive care plan and contingencies as the illness progresses. Knowledge is power and early knowledge is even more powerful.

The most hopeful of all the reasons for early detection is in some cases the symptoms can be halted or reversed. This will drastically improve quality of life for the patient and piece of mind for the family. Many new treatments are being studied and often they work best in earlier cases.

If you or someone you know is experiencing frequent memory loss that doesn't seem characteristic, trouble remembering how to do basic household tasks, or confusion due to the feeling of lost time, don't hesitate to talk to a neuropsychologist. Neuropsychologists currently have top notch diagnosis methods that measure and monitor decision making, personal perceptions, and higher reasoning. Trained care professionals will also administer an MMSE, or Mini Mental State Examination, which will record and track the disease's progress. Early diagnosis is your best chance at getting the upper hand on Dementia and Alzheimer's.
